Although highly hypothetical, it is fair to say that if Google all of a sudden seized to exist there would be thousands of hungry Internet marketers world wide. The truth is that Google is financially sound and will probably not go anywhere, anytime soon; however, making one’s business 100% dependent of the existence of another company is a recipe for disaster.
If your website gets shut down, or your Google rankings plummet overnight, or your quality scores go from 10 to 0, your income would very likely change dramatically if you are making money exclusively from Google traffic. However, if you took the time to build a customer database as your were building the rest of your business, any major outside change would have a much lesser impact in your bottom line because you can still bring messages to your customer base and market to them.
I am of course, not discrediting the huge asset good google rankings can be, but I am not willing to put all of my financial eggs in one basket.
If you are not building a list right now, I highly recommend you ask yourself: “What will happen to my business if my main source of customers disappeared?” If the answer to that question doesn’t scare you, then keep doing what you are doing… but if it does, it is time you start building your list, and most importantly, building a relationship with your customers and prospects.
