If your website gets shut down, or your Google rankings plummet overnight, or your quality scores go from 10 to 0, your income would very likely change dramatically if you are making money exclusively from Google traffic.  However, if you took the time to build a customer database as your were building the rest of your business, any major outside change would have a much lesser impact in your bottom line because you can still bring messages to your customer base and market to them.

I am of course, not discrediting the huge asset good google rankings can be, but I am not willing to put all of my financial eggs in one basket.

If you are not building a list right now, I highly recommend you ask yourself: “What will happen to my business if my main source of customers disappeared?” If the answer to that question doesn’t scare you, then keep doing what you are doing… but if it does, it is time you start building your list, and most importantly, building a relationship with your customers and prospects.

One of the best-kept secrets of list building is that quality is better than quantity.  You will hear time and time again that the bigger your list is the more money you will make.  This is true, but it is incomplete.  You will make more money from a bigger list only if you have focused on building a quality list.  A quality list is a list of responsive subscribers that like you, trust you, and are eager to open your emails, take your advice and buy what you are selling. 

To build a highly responsive list of subscribers you will first of all need a website.  Although it is not absolutely required, I recommend you buy your own domain name; this will give a better first impression and will make you look more professional and trust worthy than if you have a page in a free hosting account full of ads.

Once you have your own domain name and hosting you must enlist an autoresponder service.  These services are specialists in email deliverability.  They will help you capture your visitors name and email addresses, and will send your subscribers the emails you have pre-written in previously determined time intervals.  Autoresponders are extremely powerful marketing tools because in the eyes of your subscribers it is almost as if you had taken time out of your busy day to write them an email full of advice.  I personally use the autoresponder services of AWeber.com, but have also heard great things of GetResponse.com.

Autoresponder services like AWeber and GetResponse will give you a piece of code you must insert in your website in order for them to capture your visitors’ name and email address.  In order to entice your visitors to give you their personal information I highly recommend you offer some type of free product or service.  In order to do this, you just set up a different page in your website where your visitors can download your free product, then you point your autoresponder thank you page to the page you just created.  That way your visitors enter their information, and they are immediately redirected to the download page.  For an example of how I have done this, check out http://www.turnideasintocash.com

Your free gift should be something of value and great quality.  Remember this is your first impression, so you want to make it a good one.  Once you have subscribers in your list you want to make sure you always provide plenty of value in the emails you send them.  Don’t just send them promotional emails or they will be very quick to click that “unsubscribe” link.  Send valuable advice and recommend products that you are sure will help them.
If you follow these steps to grow your email list and your nurture the relationship you have with your subscribers, you will have a very profitable email list that will grow your income for years to come.
